the iris scanner will benefit from native support

Android P will offer native support for the iris scanner. The alternative to the fingerprint sensor can thus become more popular with the efforts of a company. Facial recognition unlocking methods have been gaining momentum in recent months. The iPhone X is no stranger and builders decide to follow the lead of the apple. We have seen at OnePlus or Xiaomi, the examples are multiplying over time. The first consumer smartphone to benefit from an iris scanner was the Galaxy Note 7 and continued its way with the Galaxy S8 and S8 + among others. The recent Galaxy S9 and S9 + also benefit with hardware improvements to increase efficiency and speed. For the moment, apart from Samsung, it does not seem possible to find a consumer smartphone that is equipped. Things will probably change in the future.
Android P: native support of the iris scanner is planned
As revealed by XDA, support for unlocking iris recognition will land on Android P. The engineers of a company in charge of the development of chips dedicated to the recognition of iris are working on a HAL interface. This is involved in the way Android communicates with these scanners. This work will make it easier to implement this unlocking device in future smartphones.
For now, the fingerprint sensor still has a bright future, as it is the most popular security feature on our smartphones. OnePlus has deployed facial recognition on some of its devices through an update. Xiaomi has also followed suit with its compatriot on its latest device, the Redmi Note 5. The iris scanner would strengthen the security on future devices and its integration with Android P is good news for consumers.
