ASUS was the last smartphone maker to host a conference to present its new MWC products, which are expected to hit the market by June. Three ZenFone 5 have been announced, including two with a notch on the top of the screen. The rates are very attractive. The ZenFone 5 Lite (ZC600KL) is the smallest in the new range with a 6-inch screen in 18: 9 format (2160 x 1080 pixels). It will be offered in France in a single version 4 GB / 64 GB, 399 euros.
It is powered by a SoC Snapdragon 630, but the manufacturer also states on its website that Snapdragon 430 can be used. In France, only the first version will be put on the market tells us the manufacturer.
Four independent cameras on the ZenFone 5 LiteThe battery displays 3,300 mAh, the 4G climbs up to 400 Mb / s with the Snapdragon 630 against only 150 Mb / s with the 430. The smartphone integrates no less than four optical sensors operating « independently ". Two main cameras (20 Mpixels front, 16 Mpixels rear) and two other wide-angle 120 ° front and rear (definition not specified). The smartphone can record Full HD video at 60 fps.
NFC, facial recognition, fingerprint reader (five fingerprints), Wi-Fi 802.11ac with the Snapdragon 630, but 802.11n with the 430, Bluetooth 4.1, two SIM slots and a microSD card reader (three total slots therefore ) are in the game. All details are available here.
"Notch" and "artificial intelligence" for the ZenFone 5 and 5z twins
Then let's go to ZenFone 5 (ZE620KL) and ZenFone 5z (ZS620KL) 6.2 "with a notch (which is reminiscent of the iPhone X) and a definition of 2246 x 1080 pixels (19: 9 format). The screen occupies 90% of the space and supports the DCI-P3 color space.
When the smartphone is placed horizontally to watch a video for example, the section of the screen around the notch remains black, the format becomes 18: 9. ASUS says it has worked specifically to make this area "smarter", probably wanting to stand out here from other Android builders who have opted for this solution.
Both devices are physically identical, only the interior changes. The ZenFone 5 is powered by a Snapdragon 636 with 4 or 6 GB of memory and 64 GB of storage (eMCP). In France, only the 4 GB version will be offered, at 499 euros.
For its part, the ZenFone 5z has a Snapdragon 845 (like some Galaxy S9), with 4, 6 or 8 GB of memory and up to 256 GB of storage (UFS 2.1). In France, two versions of the 5z will be on the market:
4 GB and 64 GB: 599 euros

On both smartphones, three optical sensors are in the game: 8 Mpixel front, 12 Mpixel IMX363 and another wide angle of 120 ° rear (definition not specified). The manufacturer puts forward a slow motion mode at 120 fps in 1080p and 240 fps in 720p.
MicroSDXC card reader, 4G up to 600 Mb / s, fingerprint reader (five fingerprints), face recognition, NFC, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5, NFC, USB Type-C, 3,300 mAh battery , two speakers with amplifier NXP Smart AMP (Hi-Res Audio), two internal amplifiers, two microphones with noise reduction and support for a headset DTS Headphone X are also in the game. Technical specifications are available here.
Zenimojis and IA washing
To stay in the current trend, ZeniMoji are announced to create avatars repeating your facial expressions. A trend already seen at Apple and Samsung, but here it will be possible to broadcast them live.
Another great "buzzword" moment of this series of announcements, the highlighting of many features related to artificial intelligence, again to stick to what the competition. There are all the sauces, but six were especially highlighted: AI Camera, AI Display, AI Ringtone, AI Boost, AI Charging and AI Photo Learning.
So do not say "Auto mode" when shooting without any particular setting, do not talk about an optimized management of the battery, overclocking or even ringing adapted to ambient noise: everything is "AI". If we appreciate the presence of such features, we can only regret this marketing trend.

Especially since no detail is given on the concrete functioning of these devices. It would be appreciated that the brand refines its interface or its policy of updates rather than just holding such speeches. Moreover, at a time when its competitors sometimes rely on Android Go or Android One, here, this is never the case.
The ZenFone 5 Lite will be available from April, ZenFone 5 in May and ZenFone 5z in June.
